In 2005, The West Coast Native Health Care Society expanded its focus to include future care and housing expansion opportunities, establishing a Building Committee for that purpose.

In 2009, Under the guidance of the WCNHCS Board of Directors, The Building Committee successfully completed a 10-unit Assisted Living wing onto the west side of the Long-Term Care Facility.

Currently, two-phases of expansion are under construction set to open in late 2019. These include 13 Long-Term Care beds (RG13) and 20 Seniors’ Affordable Housing apartments (RG20).

Future Expansion (RG40 Project) The Independent Living Housing project is envisioned to accommodate low-to-moderate income seniors from the Alberni Valley and Pacific Rim regions with an emphasis on aboriginal seniors placement. As currently proposed the project includes 32 one-bedroom and 8 two-bedroom units. A few suites are also proposed for short-term accommodation for parents or family coming to Port Alberni for emergency medical and dental treatment.

Once completed in the fall of 2020, the WCNHCS Campus of Care will consist of 44 Long-Term Care beds, 10 Assisted Living units, and 60 Seniors’ Affordable Housing apartments; achieving the vision of allowing our residents the opportunity to age in place.
